Leading portals join forces to boost cross-border Web activity

STAFF REPORTER in Beijing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The three leading Internet portals in Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan have joined forces to promote cross-border traffic flow.

Greater China Portal Alliance (GPCA) brings together Hong Kong's Netvigator (http://www.netvigator.com), the mainland's Netease (http://www.netease.com) and Taiwan's Kimo (http://www.kimo.com.tw).

"We will not be a single portal site, but we offer a single portal strategy," said Kimo chairman David Lu.

The alliance allows users in Hong Kong who are interested in information from Taiwan or the mainland to access the appropriate Web pages through GPCA and vice versa.

The home pages for each portal will carry an icon leading to the GPCA page that provides links to the other two sites.

"Even though we are extremely well known in Taiwan, I doubt many people know of Kimo in Hong Kong or in the mainland. GPCA will greatly increase our exposure in those two markets," said Mr Lu.

The three companies - which have yet to make profit from their portal sites - will be able to share contents and even revenues from the sales of advertisement bundles.

They will also share on-line banner advertisements, joint logos, marketing and an on-line survey to better understand the demands of the three regions.

GPCA is not the first alliance between portal sites within the greater China region, but it is the largest as it combines the leading providers in each region.

At present, the three portals experience more than 12 million page views a day and expect to see this rise as a result of the alliance.

"We are confident that it will result in increased traffic to our specific sites," said Judy Inn, vice-president for mass consumer portals at Cable & Wireless HKT Interactive Media Services, which runs Netvigator.
