3Com Names David H. Starr To CIO Post; Starr Joins Global Networking
Leader to Continue Expansion of Company's Global Information Systems,
Power E-business Operations

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1999--3Com Corporation
(Nasdaq:COMS) today announced that David H. Starr will join the company as Chief
Information Officer effective August 2.

Starr will be chartered with directing the ongoing expansion of the company's global
information systems and supporting 3Com's E-business operations, giving the company's
customers and employees real-time access to 3Com products and services. Starr, 47, will
report directly to Bruce Claflin, 3Com President and Chief Operating Officer.

Starr has extensive experience with both E-business and supply chain operations. Before
joining 3Com, he was the CIO at Knight-Ridder, where he was responsible for their
E-business strategy, including overseeing operations of the Web sites of the company's 31
newspapers. Prior to Knight-Ridder, Starr was the CIO at Reader's Digest, where his
responsibilities included the Look Smart online service. Prior to Reader's Digest, he was CIO
for ITT Corp., where he was responsible for putting ITT's Yellow Pages online in Europe, as
well as implementing a global Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution.
