True, but in this case, it made sense. Writing off costs over 20 years is a little much. Bringing it down to a maximum of 10 years is more sensible.

I disagree. I think they purposely wrote things off NOT TO BEAT EXPECTATIONS!! The reason is that their 1999/2000 expected earnings would have been overstated by the analysts as they would have based their projections on the most recent numbers. It is better to get the "soft assets" off the books and to start fresh.

Remember, GAC tends to be overly conservative with their projections and it is for this reason they tend to beat expectations!!

Hope you get back in before they list down south...I see great potential for "Canada's best kept secret!!"
