Zoran Vaddis(TM) Decoder Shipping Inside Optibase Digital Video Network Solutions

-- Optibase, a leader in broadband digital video networking, targets advanced applications with Zoran's Vaddis MPEG-2 Decoder --
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1999-- Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq:ZRAN - news), a leading provider of integrated circuits (ICs) and embedded software for digital video and audio applications enabled by compression, announced today that Optibase (Nasdaq:OBAS - news) is shipping Zoran's Vaddis IC in their VideoPlex Xpress decoder.

Optibase is a leader in broadband digital video networking, which enables distribution over private and public networks, such as intranets and the Internet. Analysts expect demand for distance learning, corporate communications, and business television applications to drive decoder unit volume sales to 1.2 million units in 1999, up 55% from 677,000 in 1998. Further, the versatility of the Vaddis decoder allows it to be adapted to provide solutions for growing horizontal markets, such as for digital video networking.

Optibase has incorporated Zoran's MPEG technology into their products, as part of a long-term collaboration for the development of networked digital video and audio devices. The programmability of the video and audio processors internal to the Vaddis decoder has enabled it to be used for these applications. By providing flexible solutions, Zoran is leveraging its mature MPEG technology to capitalize on these adjacent markets.

Broadband digital video networking enables the transmission of video and audio over digital networks, from Internet Protocol multicasting over LAN and intranets, to ATM and satellite networks. Applications such as video archiving, distance learning, remote monitoring, and business television can be implemented with this technology. The Vaddis decoder is a core system component for supporting this diverse range of video applications. In a new application of Gilat Satellite Networks, Ltd. (Nasdaq:GILTF - news), the VideoPlex Xpress will be used to decode digital video distributed from computer servers to televisions in over 9,000 healthcare facilities in the United States via VSAT satellite link.

''Optibase plays a major role in the expanding market for broadband digital video networking,'' said Mr. Yaniv Garty, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Optibase. ''Zoran's flexible MPEG-2 decoder, coupled with their excellent development support, enabled Optibase to design a feature-rich system for our target markets.''

''Optibase's networking and video distribution technology complements Zoran's MPEG technology to effectively fill this application space,'' said Dr. Shmuel Farkash, Vice President of Marketing, Video Products of Zoran Corporation. ''Zoran is actively participating in the development of leading edge applications for MPEG technology which are now becoming available in the market.''

About the Vaddis MPEG-2 Decoder

Based on Zoran's advanced MPEG video and audio technologies, the Vaddis MPEG-2 Decoder is a flexible solution optimized to enhance the viewing and listening experience for MPEG-2 playback devices. This decoder incorporates software programmable video and audio processors, allowing this chip to support a vast array of features and applications. In this same product family is the recently introduced Vaddis IV, the industry's most advanced Integrated DVD Decoder chip. This digital video and audio decoder incorporates an NTSC/PAL video encoder and 10-bit video Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs), eliminating the need for an external chip. Enhanced video quality is achieved with functions including progressive interpolation, sharpness and brightness equalization. In addition, it has the ability to take advantage of Zoran's extensive SiliconSoftware(TM) library, giving it access to a wide variety of innovative audio algorithms. This enables the development of DVD players that incorporate MP3, HDCD(TM), DVD-Audio, 3D virtual surround, Karaoke and leading audio algorithms such as Dolby Digital(TM), DTS(TM) and MPEG5.1 playback. Advanced Vaddis decoders are currently shipping in Toshiba DVD players worldwide.
