Cabletron Systems Increases Fault Tolerance and Adds Voice Integration to ATM Networks SAN DIEGO, Jul 14, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- SmartSwitch 6500 Platform Provides Increased Resilience and Standards-Based Voice over ATM for Enterprise and Service Provider Networks Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS) today announced the availability of a new feature set for the company's award-winning SmartSwitch 6500 ATM solutions. This new feature set delivers added fault tolerance and features to improve reliability, increase efficiency, and add voice services to ATM basednetworks. The new feature set protects network availability by providing enhanced fabric redundancy, processor redundancy and system file monitoring. In addition, it adds resilience to ATM networks by offering industry standard LANE Network-to-Network Interface (LNNI) 2.0, a redundant ATM addressing system. The feature set also simplifies ATM set-up by offering "soft PVCs," a method for dynamically configuring ATM circuits, and boosts network security via new ATM address filtering systems. "The fault tolerant features of the SmartSwitch 6500 will help Cabletron sell into high-availability networks," said analyst Ron Jeffries of Jeffries Research (Arroyo Grande, CA). "A good example is the success that Cabletron is having selling its gear to large commercial and government customers who require ultra-reliable communication systems." Also adding to the SmartSwitch 6500's impressive feature set is a new versatile four-port T1/E1 Multiservice Interface Module. This new module, which supports both circuit and cell based traffic, reduces costly phone charges by allowing the integration of voice and data applications over a common network backbone. Users can connect PBXs directly to T1 or E1 ports configured for Circuit Emulation mode, eliminating the cost of expensive parallel voice networks. Each SmartSwitch 6500 supports up to 63 T1 or E1 ports, or more than 1900 voice circuits, making it an attractive new platform for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) that currently use traditional voice systems. "Cabletron is committed to delivering exceptional value with its ATM solution set. Our goal is to deliver superior functionality such as fault tolerance, multiservice integration, and end-to-end network management," said Byron Young, Cabletron's Director of ATM Products. Cabletron's ATM switching solutions continue to earn recognition for industry-leading performance and functionality. Recently, Cabletron won Network Computing's "Best Value" award for its SmartSwitch ATM solutions, and the company's SmartSwitch 9500 was independently verified by The Tolly Group for ATM switching performance. The new feature set is available and is currently shipping with all new SmartSwitch 6500 systems. The new Multiservice T1/E1 modules will be available nextquarter.
