The Q gets a word from James C...........end of text.... Wrong..!....... Jul 14, 1999 The Sun Also Rises By James J. Cramer As selloffs go, this one seems pretty bloodless so far. I am using it to buy some stuff I unloaded into strength the day before. To give you a sense of how I work, I had hit the long ball in Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) , one of my favorite stocks, and I'd left all but 20,000 shares on until yesterday. Then, when the stock was up 3, that seemed like there was too much enthusiasm and, thinking as a trader, I took advantage of the stock's rapid increase to book a profit. Today the stock acts doggy. Nothing new, all systems go, and I am back in buying, slowly, on a scale. If profit-taking ever makes sense, it would be in this case, where the stock has really zoomed. Sun is part of my trading portfolio that I look to for gains. If the market were to get clocked, I would continue to buy it down on a scale. I would let the "volatility" (read decline) work for me. (Please recall that half of my portfolio rarely trades. I don't discuss those stocks because I don't talk about small-caps.) I want to distinguish this kind of trade from a Health Management Associates (NYSE:HMA - news) "opportunity." Just because that stock's down doesn't mean it's a buy. Though I've done no work on HMA, it seems beaten up, but I know that decline isn't profit-taking. (Does anybody still have profits in that stock?) Of course, the market is still overbought, and I won't be comfortable with it again until the overbuy is worked off. (For those wondering how I judge overbought, I use the trendline oscillator that is provided to subscribers of the S&P Daily Action Stock Charts.) But for faves like Sun, I took a calculated risk that I could get back in at lower prices, and it paid off. Random musings: No opportunity to short Qualcomm (Nasdaq:QCOM - news) . It went down without me. Since this latest selloff of 3 is all that I expected to get, I have no desire to short it now.
