Nasdaq's biggest market maker opens European base

July 14, 1999 11:47 AM
LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Knight Trimark NITE , the Nasdaq stock market's biggest market maker, said on Wednesday it had opened a European beachhead in London to compete with brokers for institutional business in U.S. equities.

"We believe on an asset allocation basis, Europe has three percent of its equity allocation in the United States," Gordon Connell, managing director of institutional sales at the London office of Knight Securities International, told Reuters.

"Our firm belief is that this percentage will grow in the future from a low base," he said, adding that online trading and the introduction of more online brokers would add to volumes.

According to trading information provider AutEx, Knight Trimark had the top volume spot in Nasdaq stocks for the year to June with 17 percent of the total, followed by Charles Schwab SCH and Herzog Heine Geduld.
