Tatas top survey on infotech companies with Rs 2,551 cr ($593 mil) revenue TATA IT companies. TATA Consulting Service (TCS): tcs.com TATA Infotech Ltd (TIL) : tatainfotech.com TATA Elxi :tataelxsi.com TATA Technologies Ltd:tata.com Neeraj Saxena New Delhi, July 13: The Tatas have emerged as the single largest business group in the country with cumulative revenue of its IT companies touching Rs 2,551 crore. According to the latest Dataquest Top 20 industry survey, the Tata group companies -- TCS, TIL, Tata Elxsi and Tata Technologies -- registered a growth of over 35 per cent in 1998-99, up from Rs 1,886 crore, displacing Shiv Nadar's HCL group as the top contender to the slot. HCL group companies -- HCL Insys, NIIT, HCL Technologies and HCL Comnet -- have registered a negative growth and the cumulative revenue stood at Rs 1,981 crore in this period as against Rs 2,284 crore last fiscal, according to the magazine. However, Dataquest has commented that the group's ranking has been overshadowed by its restructuring as a result of which the number of group companies stood at five, instead of 18 in the previous year. Also, the HCL Technologies' reported turnover of Rs 864 crore has not been accepted by the survey as the money accrued to thesoftware exports business done from India was only Rs 207 crore. ''Due to this anomaly, their growth appears to be in the negative while it may not be so. If one were to combine the revenue of all HCL companies, including Bermuda-incorporated HCL Technologies' Rs 667 crore, then the group turnover will be Rs 2,650 crore,'' according to the magazine. It may be recalled that this anomaly in accounting of HCL figures has been said to be behind a Rs 1,500-crore variance in the annual software export figure reported by National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and Electronic and Software Promotion Council of India (ESC). Wipro, IBM, Godrej, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Pentafour, Infosys and Redington respectively comprise the rest of the top 10 giants. Chennai-based Cognizant Technology Solutions debuts at number seven in the rankings and is adjudged the fastest growing company with a growth rate of 156.3 per cent, followed by Baan Infosystems with 146.6 per cent and CK Birla-companyBirla Soft with a 145.6 per cent. Together, the top 30 software companies clocked a combined average growth of 73.54 per cent last year. TCS with Rs 1,518 crore, Wipro with Rs 648 crore, Pentafour with Rs 511 crore, Infosys with Rs 500 crore and NIIT with Rs 395 crore have been ranked as the country's top five software exporters. Among the software developers, Group Usha's Information Technologies India surprisingly tops the list, followed by TCS, NIIT, Siemens Information Systems and Pentafour. The top system integration vendors are Tata Infotech (seven per cent share), CMC (seven per cent) and NIIT (6.6 per cent), while CMC has been adjudged the country's top turnkey project vendor with a 7.2 per cent share of the market. The survey has ranked NIIT and Aptech together as the top IT training vendors with a cumulative share of 51.7 per cent market share and a combined revenue of Rs 617.38 crore from the business. They are followed by SISL, LCC Infotech and Tata Infotech with six per cent, 5.4 per centand 3.4 per cent share, respectively.
