Bruce,

My impressions on the various modelling packages from a users point of veiw:

From a functionality standpoint, SolidWorks and SolidEdge are pretty comparable. SolidEdge has an advantage from a marketing side, as it can be used with Unigraphics, while SolidWorks and Catia are not complimentary.

PMTC doesn't compete well on the low-end. In fact, they really seem to be losing steam overall.

Mechanical Desktop has serious shortcomings, but is popular among small shops who don't do complicated modelling. On the other hand, I was told early this year that AutoDesk was coming out with a brand new modelling package with much better capabilities sometime this year, but I haven't heard anything since.

Unigraphics is very capable. High end users with complicated assemblies would be best served by the likes of UG or Catia.

By the way- what kind of problems are you having with SolidWorks. We just went to it and I like it a lot. What version are you running?
