Let's see... selling as many products as possible is a bad thing? Okay... I realize that 3dfx probably makes less an OEM board than a retail board, but this is only a "option", not shipped with every box of that model Compaq sells. If CPQ or 3DFX was all that concerned about the quantities available, neither would have done it. Remember, having demand for a product is better than not having it. STBI had a long history of supplying CPQ with graphics boards, whether it was for the MVP line for Workstation products (S3 parts, Nvida parts) or the consumer line (TNT). Last I checked, CPQ was still a Top Five OEM, and with V3 available from DELL, CPQ and GTW, even if they are small deals, they are major OEMs.

Did you want OEMs or not?

"Sounds like a giveaway to get in the OEM door. This OEM deal sucks."

But are you surprised? I'm not. It may take a while to build the right kind of relationships with OEM's. 3dfx may think this is a necessary price to pay to get their foot into the door, before they stride through (maybe I feel a little hopeful :) ). They also showed they're not liars by getting a 3rd tier 1 OEM. Of course, this kind of deal 2 quarters from now won't cut it.

Patrick, I agree that it sounds like a giveaway to get in the door. How long will it take for Dell and Gateway to follow their lead? So what happens next quarter when the high margin $250 card is released? Sorry - all out, wait till the next shipment? Up 'till now, I've been quite confident that 3dfx would hold the line on margins. Sounds like I may have been wrong. Joe C.
