Makes you wonder, doesn't it. No formula. The pre-open trading of brokerage houses and big traders sometimes give a clue. Of course you can't take part in that. The foolish market orders gives the specialist or market maker a free reign to drive it any way they want to. I haven't used a market order in years. So decision is up to Specialist and MMs based on buy and bid orders they have in hand and what pre-opening trading suggest. The morning trades are more important than the after market trades.
