Good call! That makes a 4-Tier Internet-based application, doesnt it? This component reside in between the web farm storing session variables while maintain interaction with BIG/ip concerning session state. If the http daemon on the web server goes down, BIG/ip breaks the state but direct users along with the session variables to another web server.

Another thing that BIG/ip cannot do is to keep a SSL session state in between multiple servers, as SSL client certificate is tieing ONE web server to ONE client browser only.

From my experience with ECommerce, depending on the nature of your site, only 1%-3% of all visitors buy (think of how many times you browse a store before you pull out your credit card). Therefore, this outrage will affect only a small percentage of all visitors as most of them spend most of their time doing Non-SSL window shopping.
