Metabyte Personalizes Microsoft TV
MbTV™ provides enhanced television experiences for consumers and
new revenue opportunities for MSOs and content developers

June 14, 1999, Fremont, CA – Metabyte, Inc., a leading provider of system-level software integration services to PC and consumer electronics OEMs, announced it will be offering its MbTV products for Microsoft TV, the client software member of the Microsoft TV Platform Adaptation Kit (Microsoft TVPAK).

MbTV is a suite of software products designed to create personalized television experiences ranging from digital VCRs to individualized TV portals. MbTV automatically learns its viewer's television watching tastes and creates individualized profiles that can be utilized for a variety of services: MbTV can suggest desirable programs from an Electronic Program Guide (MbTV EPG Search), automatically record desirable programs (MbTV Digital VCR), or, in future datacasting scenarios, filter desirable content from massive amounts of broadcast content (MbTV Information Channel).

As programming choices increase, so does the need for personalization and time-shifting capabilities. MbTV delivers these features in a completely transparent fashion, allowing viewers to use television as they normally do.

However, MbTV doesn't just improve old-fashioned television watching. MbTV profiles act as filters that are key to the effective distribution of a variety of digital content, including information services and targeted advertising. At the same time, MbTV does not require that consumers' personal data ever be uploaded. MbTV can deliver its full effectiveness via a one-way pipe.

Consumers benefit from MbTV by the ease with which they can manage the increasingly rich selection of content delivered via broadcast. MSOs benefit by additional revenue derived from new services enabled by MbTV's personalization mechanisms. And networks/content providers benefit through increased revenue from highly-valued targeted advertising as well as expanded exposure for existing content.

Over two years in development, Metabyte's patent-pending MbTV technology is designed to be integrated into set-top boxes or advanced TVs. "We're excited to be able to target Microsoft's new television software platform," said Manu Mehta, Metabyte's president and CEO. "Metabyte's approach to this market requires customized solutions for individual OEM and MSO requirements. A rich software platform that offers the depth and breadth of Microsoft TV creates very significant opportunities."

"We are pleased to be working with Metabyte," said Alan Yates, Director of Platform Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "The combination of Microsoft TV with the MbTV client software will enable a rich consumer experience."

Metabyte will deliver its MbTV client software on Microsoft TV in Q3'99, and will provide Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system-based components needed for the preparation of targeted content in Q4'99.
