This is the best color (PROFILE - grey / blue), but is there any way to get rid of those brown/orange bands that outline the upper links? Or make those bands the same color as the contrast color.

beta.siliconinvestor.com

EDIT

Also the upper header should not be so HIGH, it takes up alot of space.

Profile is really smart looking, and easy on the nervous system. News is agreeable. Quotes and historical prices are even more ghastly variations on the "duty" theme.

Thanks for your willingness to consider a change. Karen.

I notice that the messages have lost most of their white space (when viewed on a 640 wide window). I see this as a huge mistake. The wide border was the single best feature of the original beta design. By dropping it, you lose the advantage of the negative space within which the message stands out. I hope you'll go back to the wider left and right border. This narrow border would make the dreaded box even messier on the message page.

The new spacing is unbalanced. In the original the left/right space was roughly equal to the white space between the message text and the message number text box and also to the space between the bottom of the message and the "Next" links (which would still look better on the right side).

Hi, Bryan, and Happy Birthday!
I agree with Cheeky - the colors under "Company Profile." Easiest on the eyes. Failing that, the one for News.
Thanks

Bryan, you should have posted links to the different colors , it would have made it easier for people to see. Some are missing some of the color schemes.

Hi Bryan, Happy Birth day.

I guess I don't care which of the five color schemes you guys pick, I don't care much for any of them, well, I vote for the brighter colors!

How long until you phase out the "Classic SI" ? Will we have a choice of keeping the old one or is it do or die with the new one?

I hope in the new version we can clear all new messages in our subject BMs on the top. And I REALLY PRAY that the we don't have to wait for the full page to load to see subjects with new messages.

I just went into beta land for the first time in close to a week. Abandoned it as soon as I pulled up my BMs and it took about 30 seconds to load the page....This is too long during the day. Of course, this is just my opinion, you have to satisfy the masses. No easy task. Good luck!

Hi BB,

1) Profile

(Tri-color contrast looks great but I'd like to see what colors are used when messages are read vs. unread - would suggest tan & blue as in the 'news' format for this purpose.)

2) News

(A very close 2nd place.)

3) Chart

(Nice, relaxing to view - but no contrast at all and sorta dull... Why is that green line in there at the bottom? UGH! :)

57/58) Quote/Historical Prices

(A tie... TACKY CITY! Please don't punish us like this!! I suggest referring this color scheme to mutual friends and I've written a short letter for your convenience below. ;)

Dear Yahoo/RB/MF,

Boy, do we have a TIP for you!!! Our extensive research here at Silicon Investor shows that 99 out of 100 users prefer *this* color scheme on their financial site of choice:

beta.siliconinvestor.com

Always glad to help the underdog, I remain,

Sincerely Yours,
BB

Heh Man, your web guys are starting to impress me. A project like this is great experience for them.

I like the new customized options!!

The border is GREAT, makes your eye go right to the message.

And the Gray / Blue color scheme looks great, as long as the orange/brown lines are changed to gray.

I like the color scheme of Profile, but still don't like the reversed type in the bars. The color scheme of News is okay, and it has black text in bar. Hooray! I'll offer the same observation that I've made to my, um, modestly endowed Mrs:

Maybe we can push 'em together and make one good one. <g>

Is the spacing change "the change"?

Sometimes there's a right margin of white space, sometimes not?

I read too much during the day to subject my eyes to the new site.

I'm seriously going to miss SI. I really am.

Happy bd,

Caroline

Hello Bryan,

I am glad to see the messages in box format, as it will reduce the workload on eyes,,, But please give us box option when we view the next 10 messages and also align the box to the left margin...

Also there are many threads on SI which will have 100-400 messages on a daily basis... I would like to have the option to view the next 20/50/100 messages based on my choice... I really really like the Browse Master which I am using these days...

I like the current SI color scheme, over the 5 combinations you have provided else I prefer Profile followed by News...

In spite of all these changes, I still like the current SI site with BrowseMaster...

The SubjectMarks page reminds me YAHOO message board page rather than the unique and friendly classic SI SubjectMarks page...

I am impressed by the "Customize" option you have provided. It is really great!

I have no complaints with the SI Datek banner, if the area/size does not increase...

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks,
DB

I've been test-driving the right-justified navigation links. Although it takes a while to get used to the change (even for me who had a sample), I do like it. I found myself keeping the mouse in one place and not having to move it out of the way as I mouse-wheel scroll through a long message.

I think it also looks better. Having lost the white space, the message space yesterday was starting to look very cluttered. By pulling both the navigation links and the date to the right, it's cleaned up quite a bit (although I still think a wider border would be look far better).

One tweak. What do you think of the suggestion made by someone else (David?) and moving the navigation links a bit away from the right by about a quarter-inch or so?

I would like to suggest that you allow folks to block individuals if they do not wish to receive PM's from a particular individual. Currently the system is all or none. I'd rather let most folks be able to PM me, and block out the one or two pests.

I just scrolled through 10 posts on this thread.

Did we lose the line between messages? Without it the messages run together. Can you please make it come back.

Bryan,

I am not seeing this problem addressed by anyone but me and it is one I have brought up before.

I see banners and "Join Silicon Investor" everytime I click a link to another thread from the beta site.

Am I the only one that this happens to? if so, why? if not, why isn't everyone up in arms? -- it's a bigger situation than the Datek link.

I prefer the charts page. However, it wouldn't be that much work to make the colors a parameterized thing and just generate it on the fly.
That said, you could just put the color scheme choice on the options screen and build them on the fly.

oooo, be still my twitchy mouse finger...

The Code Gnomes have been making changes.

Narrower margins - I LIKE
(but I don't like the fixed width text area - I prefer auto wordwrap like first beta)
(the text can still be lost off the right edge)

"Previous/Next" buttons moved to the right side- I LIKE

"Respond to Post ###" on ea msg in the 'Next 10' screen - I LIKE
(need to add to the 'next 40' list too)

Red Inbox notification - I LIKE

Still waiting for the "More Info" bunch-o-links to be folded under the stock data at the bottom (as one thin line as someone (RTev?)showed before)... they are still pushed too far off the edge of the screen. (my SIwindow width is at about 65- 75% of monitor width)

The Search box at the bottom now defaults to StockTalk setting... and it does not seem to do anything anymore.
Anyway, I know you were reworking that feature anyway.

I know everyone's tired of the color debate by now, but I want to cast a write in vote for dark blue and yellow and maybe gray, something like what this site uses,
