The National Post reports in its Thursday edition that the Canadian equity
market could outperform its U.S. counterpart this year and for the next
several years and produce a return higher than the historic average annual
one of around 10 per cent, says Ted Ransby, president of Winnipeg-based GWL
Investment Management Ltd. Ahead of the game, Mr. Ransby and colleague
Patricia Nesbitt started to "warm toward" smaller- and mid-cap stocks and
resource sectors for Sonita Horvitch's "Buy & Sell" column in April, 1998.
For this column, Ms. Nesbitt has chosen Global Thermoelectric Inc. This
company is developing a solid oxide fuel cell that generates electricity
and heat with no harmful emissions. Its target market is different from
that of Ballard Power Systems Inc. "Global Thermoelectric's applications
are different, but their potential is very robust." In mid-April, the
company announced a deal to develop an advanced fuel cell for Delphi
Automotive Systems Corp. The investment community is anxiously awaiting
details of the transaction, says Ms. Nesbitt. "This stock is of a
speculative nature, but it is exciting in that it is at the early stage of
its development."
