Thanks for your input on the System Tray management.

I removed icq from two different places using the startup,settings, taskbar, startmenu, remove path and to my great surprise the icq icon still showed up in the system tray. (after a reboot of course...<g>).

It certainly isn't clear that the startup menu is the place to manage the system tray area.

Actually this problem is getting interesting :-/
