Lets face it, MP3 quality sucks. Consumers like it because you can download it off the net and its getting a lot of press at the moment.

If (big IF) SDMI can come up with a new killer, value-added format and use their marketing muscle to get the word out, consumers will turn on a dime. Just as they did from vinyl to cassette tapes and from cassette tape to CD.

The cool thing about Wave is that you could, in theory, have the entire universe of albums ever made at your fingertips. Why go out and buy an album? Play and listen to the songs you want for a nickel a piece, Wave will manage ownership. Once you've listened to Sweet Baby James a few times, voila you own the 1970 classic album. Or, maybe you want to sample the whole album for a quarter, no problem, Wave can do that. Want to watch the music video too? Sure, go ahead that'll cost you a dime. MTV surely won't be playing that video anytime soon. And if you own the album, it might be half price as a cross-promotion. And the next time JT is in town, you might just get an e-mail with a discount off a concert ticket. The possibilities are endless.

One things for sure, I'd be ecstatic if I had access to everything that was ever recorded. The "WaveJukeBox.com" concept is Large with a capital L.

Dear Bill,

You voice a very valid opinion, but consumers cannot have their cake and eat it. I would agree that the price of CDs are high, but that has always been the way that markets have developed: people see they they can be rewarded for their enterprise, and consumers reap the benefit of choice.

Consumers deserve a better deal than to be ripped off by the big music studios, but artists also deserve better than to be ripped off by consumers.

Free MP3 could kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

SDMI, and specifically the Wave model of it, restores the balance. Artists could bring their wares to market directly, bypassing the censorial layer of Big Business.
