Well, I'm no marketing genius and don't have access to the various marketing plans, research and business/profit margin analysis, etc but this whole direction of "free" computers to look at the advertising banners on a specific web site just isn't about computing. It's got a bad smell...desperate appeal to it. Of course, AOL isn't about computing. It's about advertising dollars. Microsoft has always been about computing and I hope they and Dell and Micron and whoever knows what the hell they're doing. I've got some poor white trash relatives who'll jump at this. They also furnish their trailer with rent to own furniture and appliances. This is right down their alley. Anything "free" appeals to them. They'll order the computer, sign up for MSN, and within a week will have cussed out them g**d*** tecky folks cause they don't know how to talk English, will have smashed the computer to make it defective, boxed it up and will dare Microsoft to come get the dang thang and enforce the free "rent to own agreement".

If this is the direction Microsoft must take to stay competitive and it will add to the bottom line of my portfolio then so be it. But I really don't think deep down in my gut that this will last. Buy a computer and get free internet access makes sense but visa versa just doesn't compute. It's really gonna test some traditional alliances I would think.
