U.S. Gap plans British stores expansion - Times

August 1, 1999 06:41 PM

LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - U.S. retailer GAP Inc (GPS) plans to more than double its British presence by opening another 150 stores in Britain over the next three years, the Times reported on Monday.

GAP had kicked off expansion plans with a deal to buy British retailer C&A's Oxford Street store in central London, the newspaper said.

It would become the largest GAP store in Britain.

"We didn't want to move, but GAP gave us an offer we could not refuse," the Times quoted a spokesman for C&A as saying.

GAP already has 110 stores in Britain.
