Wi-LAN Inc - Wi-Lan president wins 1999 Technically Excellent Canadians Award Wi-LAN Inc WIN Shares issued 18,483,829 1999-07-14 close $8.65 Thursday Jul 15 1999 Ms. Heather Oake reports Dr. Hatim Zaghloul, president and co-founder of Wi-LAN Inc., a leading wireless data/Internet communications company, was named a technically excellent Canadian for his pioneering work in wireless technology at an awards ceremony at Comdex/Canada in Toronto on July 14. Dr. Zaghloul received the award for his groundbreaking development of Wi-LAN's patented W-OFDM (Wide-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology that opens the door to a wide range of wireless applications. Canadian Computer Wholesaler developed the TEC awards to profile Canadians who deserve recognition for their contributions to technological innovation and excellence. "I am very pleased to receive this award. The seven years of research and development of the W-OFDM technology, the launch of I.WiLL our flagship 30Mbps Access Point product, the continued commitment, and dedication of Wi-LAN's staff have made this possible," said Dr. Zaghloul. "We are entering the next millenium with technology that will put Canada and Wi-LAN at the forefront of the new wireless age." The 30Mbps I.WiLL Access Point also enables Wi-LAN to push forward its development of the world's first channel estimator for W-OFDM that can mitigate multipath effects, while introducing an innovative new error-correction technology. With aggressive development plans, Wi-LAN expects to produce similar units in excess of 100Mbps powered by its ongoing W-OFDM research. Wi-LAN also sees huge licensing potential for other related products such as wireless multimedia access appliances that will allow users to tap into Internet networks while on the move. The recognition from CCW and Canadian Computer Paper helps strengthen Dr. Zaghloul's commitment of using wireless technology to put communications in the hands of the individual anytime, anywhere. This is the second year for the CCW TEC Awards, which focus on technological innovation and excellence by Canadians. A panel from both CCW and Canadian Computer Paper judges the nominations.
