Taiwan Export Growth No. 1 among Four Asian Dragons
Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Taiwan registered the largest export growth among Asia's four "little dragons" in the first half of 1999, Board of Foreign Trade (BOFT) Director-General Chen Ruey-long said on Thursday.
Compared with other Asian countries in general, Taiwan ranked third behind only the Philippines and Malaysia, Chen said during a meeting of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which oversees the board's operations.

Taiwan exports totaled US$57.4 billion in the first six months of the year, representing a 5.5 percent increase, and a trade surplus of US$6.23 billion, over the same period of last year, according to Chen. In June alone, Taiwan exports reached US$9.86 billion, up 8.2 percent from the year-earlier level.

Taiwan's leading five export items were electronics, information industry and telecommunications products, and yarn, as well as machinery and steel, Chen said, adding that outbound shipments of electronics led the other four items with an 18.8 percent increase over the same period of last year.

The United States, Hong Kong, the European Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and Japan were Taiwan's leading five export markets.

Taiwan exports to Japan and ASEAN rose by 19 percent and 13 percent, respectively, while outbound shipments to South Korea jumped by 58.4 percent, BOFT tallies show.
