ORCT had great earnings and is significantly undervalued when compared to others in the group.

Huh? I thought ORCT didn't have any earnings. I thought ORCT had losses.

The others in the group (I assume you mean those with the xDSL intellectual property) include ALA, PAIR and AWRE, and they all have earnings. How is the only money loser the only undervalued one?

[intc/csco adsl]

hi dave,

as i suppose you have noticed, Intel announced today that they are going to be entering the adsl marketplace... believe this probably bears watching.. fwiw:

the very interesting part is that intc is gonna be doing cpe and .. and their technology/compatibility deal with cisco is described as intc's "First Step to Deliver Broadband Access Technology".. (and not for example strategic exclusive partnership)... am wondering what intc's second or third step might be? ;)

don't think it too much of a stretch that they might be interested in cpe compatibility/ and related silicon etc deals with other adsl deployment market leaders, particularly those involved internationally... and especially those who own their own core technology.. ;)

and we know orct is distinctly not interested in cpe..

believe today's intc press release is another step in intc's isp/telco broadband strategy (including data warehousing/e-commerce) announced in april.. and in line with those plans the press release (below) notes that the intc modems will available thru telco's (and later, i expect thru relevant isps).. also the international spin fits..

right now reports have intc affiliated with 50 ISPs in the usa and 150 in the rest of the world, intel has said they hope (expect) to boost this to "500 companies by year's end and as many as 1,000 organizations within two years..." - quite a ramp ...

there will be various levels to these "affiliations" between intc and these ISPs.. but the basic idea is that (in the longer run) ISPs are gonna make their $ not so much from fees for providing Internet access, but from (re) selling "many new Internet-related applications, products and services, such as Web hosting and creation, e-commerce and customer premise equipment ..(isp's) are becoming an important influencing force between Internet technology and small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as consumers." "
intel.com

and intc is expecting/requiring their affiliated ISPs to re-sell a certain quantity of intc products and services.. so essentially these isp's become an international sales force of value added resellers for intc.. (am gonna skip the intc telco/ systems integrator angle for now)

along these lines intc recently signed a cooperation agreements with T-Online (dt's isp) ... as well as with bt's isp...

and looking forward to ntt (japan): guess who controls japan's largest isp? company's name starts with an "f" and ends with a "u" with an "i" in the middle:

the following excerpt certainly sounds like they are planning on working with an international someone for e-commerce /content etc and prime candidate would seem to be intc:

"The creation of @nifty reflects Fujitsu's commitment to expanding its Internet business. In the future, @nifty will be positioned as a consumer- oriented service infrastructure, providing a new business "venue" for partner companies that wish to take advantage of the @nifty network. New services will be central to its future expansion, and special emphasis will be given to linkages with global partners and the creation of new business opportunities in the global marketplace..."
fujitsu.co.jp

and then there's gte (both a telco and isp) ... have been trying to sort out connections between gte/intc: best i've been able to come up with: gte provides intc with their phone service; gte and intc/picturetel have a partnership with gte for videophones (which have been trialled over gte adsl); gte/fujitsu/orct/intc g.lite trial with intc employees not too far back... wonder whose modems they were using :) ...
--

from one point of view this all seems very improbable (orct/intc).. and could very well not pan out... on the other hand, fit is pretty good and it's certainly entertaining... :)

---

btw next year's quad adsl heavy/octet g.lite fujitsu adsl chip sounds great!

best wishes
s
