The Iridium birds are up there, but will anyone cough up the money to maintain the system even if they are bankrupt and restructured? Remember they expect 1 failure every 2 months. Also remember that the first birds, if memory serves, were launched in May of 1997(?). That means they are getting long of tooth(in Iridium years). Will MOT pay to replenish the constellation? I doubt it. Will they keep making phones? Why should they? I assume that MOT is subsidizing the phone cost now to get that $995 price. Will they continue to eat the losses? If MOT cuts the cord, Iridium is a constellation suitable only for laser target practice.
