I don't think you can get a camera that'll last for even $500. Cameras are "electronics" now, with gobs of ICs and wires and many little motors and sensors, and that Stuff breaks. Think "semi-disposable". We paid $180 for our baby Olympus three years ago, and it is beginning to show signs of weirdness.
There is no way you can hope to match the sharpness and durability of a full-frame 35mm SLR camera. Does the camera have to be small?
