Good point that I'd forgotten, VMan, re: satellite replenishment. If the failure rate is even half what you said, and given the constellation's relative inability to work with "gaps," Irid's maintenance costs will be substantially higher than G*s.

There ought to be a way to use the Irid birds in "bent pipe" mode for something, however...Loral or Orbi ought to be thinking about it...I hate the thought of all that space h/w going completely to waste.

Vman: you said Remember they expect 1 failure every 2 months. Also remember that the first birds, if memory serves, were launched in May of 1997(?). That means they are getting long of tooth(in Iridium years).

Fine point, I* has been quoting a 10% yearly replenishment rate for the sats. (no doubt due to the requirement to justify the huge payments they are (were?) giving to Mot - what is it $600 mil a year?)

Also ...long in the tooth (Iridium years), dont you mean (DOG years)? LOL

Mot is correct to complain that the other members are not putting up any money. As a matter of fact Lockheed and Sprint have done nothing to support the constellation at all. Maybe they are pissed at the sweet deal Mot got. Then again they should have known better.

Mot has made their money on I*, sure they would like to make more, but they proved their point and put up the sats. They pioneered the assembly line approach and certainly learned a lot as to what tests they should and shouldn't make.(So many have failed on orbit, I would hope they learned something!)

Boeing has cash for investments - CFO

NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) - Aerospace giant Boeing Co. is looking at opportunitites
to grow its business and has cash for investments, Chief Financial Officer Debby Hopkins
said Thursday.

''We have a beehive of activity in looking at opportunities to grow this business,'' Hopkins
said during a luncheon briefing in New York. ''We clearly have cash and we have the ability to do some investments.''

Earlier Thursday, Hopkins told analysts and reporters that the company does not expect to make any more significant
divestitures.

Hopkins said the investments could be made ''to expand something we are already doing today'' or ''adjacent opportunities,''
such as in its engineering services business.

''Most of the things we're looking at are triple-digit type opportunities,'' Hopkins told reporters during the briefing.

When asked if the company would have enough cash to buy back stock, make acquisitions and fund a new aircraft program,
Hopkins said, ''I feel very comfortable that we have the ability today to juggle those things.''
