Buy a used full-frame SLR out of the specialty ads. Everybody wants a pocket camera now, so you might be able to score a real nice full-sizer for cheap. I don't know. Try it?

My dad, who is a photo hobbyist (as Chris is, and, to a lesser extent, I am) got Nick a Nikon F-1 at a pawn shop for Christmas - I forget what he paid for it, but it was less than $200. But learning to manipulate lenses and f-stops is a challenge.
