"Actually, I thought your first sentence was extremely penetrating and true."

I've been an employee (ouch!)

I've been an employer (OUCH!)

Now I'm an independent consultant (YES!) and in that context I currently sit on the boards or advisory boards of 6 public corporations.

The most valuable thing I have learned over the years is that if you want a successful business with workers who work well, find out what everyone knows how to do and what everyone likes to do, and match those facts up as closely as possible with what needs to be done. Then provide training where aptitude is greater than skill. And whenever possible let peers provide the training internally. Many people KNOW how to do things they don't really like doing, so let them train those who like to do those things.

I guess that's four things I've learned.

"Hmmm- so we benevolent rulers- just don't worry about that stuff?"

Micro-managing is the surest and quickest way to kill an enterprise. All benevolent rules are macro-managers and understand that the micro-managers need to be allowed to do their jobs.

That'll be $500 (grin)
