Intel and Cisco to work on high-speed modems HILLSBORO, Ore., July 15 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. <INTC.O> said Thursday it plans to enter the market for high-speed computer modems for consumers and agreed to work with Cisco Systems Inc. <CSCO.O> to work on shared technology for the fast-growing Internet access market. Intel's said it entered the pact with Cisco to "develop, manufacture and market" a line of PC-based asymmetrical digital subscriber line, or DSL, modems based on Cisco's technology, which is used mostly in the office market. The DSL technology, which is high-speed Internet access delivered over copper telephone wires at speeds up to 25 times faster than existing services, has been slow to enter the consumer marketplace, where cable modem has been claiming a much larger share of service. The Intel and Cisco effort aims to boost the telephone-based services in a large-scale deployment of equipment outside the office market. "Faster, simpler access to the Internet is a key component to Intel's vision of a billion connected people in the next decade," said Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Network Communications Group. For Intel, the entry into the high-speed, or "broadband" consumer market for Internet products, brings it further from its core business of making computer chips for personal computers. Cisco, in direct competition with Lucent to win more of the telephone-based data market, could expand its already dominant role in office networks to more consumer products with the agreement. It will get licensing fees and expand the use of its technology into the emerging home market, leaving manufacturing to Intel, with whom it has worked in the past. "Our collaboration on broadband access technology is a logical extension of this relationship," said David Gudmundson, vice president and general manager of the DSL and Systems Software Business Unit at Cisco.
