I didn't pay much attention to the global scene at that time so I can only tell you what I've read about it. At a certain point the Japanese authorities decided to raise rates and burst it.

I also read conflicting stories about the excesses starting to spill over into price inflation (early stage), but I'm not sure.

The best person to ask is probably Bill Fleckenstein. He recognized Japan for what it was before the masses and was able to profit from the decline. I'm sure he can give you the real scoop.
