If the US women won the world cup in 1991 then why does this say that 1999 is the third annual womens world cup? Or are they saying the US women have won three times? Never mind, I researched this and found my answer. The Womens World Cup has been played 3 times. The first match, which the US did in fact win in 1991, was an Inaugural tournament. It was not the same level of play by any means according to what I see here, with few participants. The U.S. captured its second World Cup title after winning the inaugural tournament in 1991. The Americans became the first host nation to win the championship in the third edition of the Women's World Cup. sports.excite.com
