.... Research by International Data Corp. predicts the online population in China will reach 3.8 million by year's end, up from last year's 2.4 million, and expects that by 2003, China will have 16.1 million Internet users, with Hong Kong and Taiwan boasting 2.2 million and 4.4 million users, respectively. The three markets combined, IDC expects, will account for nearly 40% of all online users in the Asian-Pacific region outside Japan.

China.com runs Chinese- and English-language portals for the greater China region through four main sites: www.china.com, www.cww.com, www.hongkong.com and www.taiwan.com. The portals provide news, free e-mail accounts, online chat forums, free home-page hosting, and Web-search and directory services. Together, the sites have 400,000 registered free e-mail users, with www.hongkong.com the most popular of the three, a spokeswoman for China.com said.

The two-year-old company was started by the closely held China Internet Corp., which is controlled by China's state news agency Xinhua, and has been closely linked with the Chinese government, making it an appealing target among large U.S. companies wanting a piece of the China market.
