RE: Anyone have any suggestions as to why GBLX may be interested in such short-haul and highly unreliable (comparatively speaking) platforms? Frank, you asked pretty much the same question in a post to me yesterday and, after giving it several hours of intensive thought, i believe the answer is to be found in the paragraph preceding the question: signing up to be the first beta customer. My opinion is that the astronomical number of way too smart for their own good people that are VP's of the various subsidiaries that make up Global Crossing Ltd, under the lack leadership of the ridiculously over paid Auntie Bob, don't have a clue what course to steer this rudderless ship on. My guess is that they have no idea of how they could ever make money from the WaveStar OpticAir system and have no plans to deploy it, but since they are just sitting around all day watching the waves move the sand away from the proposed landing stations (while Jenson Chowerhead refuses to provide an "invertor information") they figured , "Hey, we can test it for free. Why not? this could be fun!" On a slightly more positive note, Global Crossing has gotten more than a little publicity (aka: free advertising). As you may have noticed, more than a few publications that carried the story of Lucent's (future) new product mentioned that Global Crossing will be the first to test it. Even the poor excuse for a news paper that i work for mentioned GBLX in the 5 paragraphs they devoted to this life changing technological break through. Oh, in case i did not make it clear enough: at this time, i am not too happy with some of the people employed by Global Crossing Ltd.
