Many thanks for your comments, Grace. I'll dig deeper into the ATHM thread.

I remember reading about the gradual performance increases due to TCI(ATHM)/Excite@Home caching. The stated purpose was to alleviate "neighborhood hub" bottlenecks, but I'm sure there's also an intent to lock users in via connection speed that disappears when you stray from the net within a net.

All these subtle (or not-so-subtle) technological tricks reinforce my belief that the MSO's are placing a tremendous economic importance on bundling services while at the same time publicly declaring how "open" they are in order to avoid regulation.

Could this be why I have so much trouble with Netscape now that I have a cable modem and ELNK? Or is it ELNK? Or both? I am nw working in IE because Netscape is SOOO slow in the morning - will try to open it later.
