I agree that "then" is unnecessary, and as I wrote, I wouldn't have said it or written it that way. Even in the tit-for-tat situations, whether or not "if" and "then" is used depends on the speaker's style, but it certainly seems more natural in a tit-for-tat scenario where strong words are flying.

I can't keep my eyes open, so will finish this at another time.
