The thread founders set the parameters for individual threads - click on 'Welcome to Silicon Investor' above and you'll read the purpose of this one. Overall rules for the site are set out in 'Terms of Use' at the bottom of each page. One of the admittedly less serious violations of the ToU is the persistent making of off-topic posts.

We all have favourite stocks. Feel free to ask me about several really exceptional fantastic outstanding opportunities of a lifetime. But not here ... just PM me or follow my bio to the appropriate thread. Here it's spam.

Looks like GPSite could have posted his Vaxgen here - #Subject-26145 ... seems to invite that sort of post. There are most likely others under the Biotechnology section - exchange2000.com
Click on 'Talk' in the left-hand corner, you get this - exchange2000.com
... there are many sections, with many active threads in each. Some of the traders' threads look to me like they would invite a reasonable mention of GPSite's stock - exchange2000.com

Nobody's calling the stock a PoS, it seems to have a prospectus on edgar and looks to me an honest and very likely competent effort. If GPSite learns the developed etiquette of the site, i think he should have no problem attracting interest. But not here. As Bob would say, 'it's a bit like robbing the only doughnut shop in town'.

Who makes the rules for what can and can't be discussed on this web site?

Look at message 0. It says what this thread is about.

"This is question&answer forum for new SI members, as well as a place for existing members to make suggestions and discuss anything related to making SI a better place."

On any thread where the topic isn't self-evident from the title, it's a good idea to read message 0. (Just go to the message number on any post, enter 0, and return, and it will take you to message 0.)

who determines what gets pulled from the this web site? Do you?

Nope. Not I. The hardworking SI employees do. But they don't do it arbitrarily. They only pull messages which violate the Terms of Use. If you bother to read the Terms of Use, which you agreed to comply with when you signed up for SI, you will find that "Posting improper or off-topic messages" is a violation of the Terms of Use. (So is spamming, but we'll pass that for the moment.) Given what this thread is about, GP's was unquestionably an off-topic message.

I note that you're quite new on SI and so still learning. Like any organization that brings together thousands of diverse people, certain rules are necessary to keep things flowing smoothly. Here, the rules are in the Terms of Use. It only takes a few minutes to read them -- there is a link to them on almost every screen. May I suggest that you read them before you jump into criticizing the way the board is run? It's like the traffic rules. If we all obey them, things will flow as smoothly as possible. If some people choose to run red lights, go the wrong way down one way streets, drive half the speed limit in the fast lanes, etc., the whole system gets bollixed up.

GP's post was off-topic here, and violated the Terms of Use. It also violated the rights of people who come to this thread for the purposes of discussing what the thread is for, as stated in the opening message. It was very proper for SI to remove it from this thread. I assume they left it posted on the threads where it belonged.

I notice that you have only posted to one board, JC Penney. If you are really interested in that company, I expect that you would be rather annoyed if posters came in and started talking about the dishonesty of Bill Clinton. That is important, and deserves to be discussed, but not on the Penney thread, and you would be quite justified in asking them (I hope politely the first time) to move it elsewhere, and if they didn't, asking the SI management to deal with them and let you get back to discussing Penney there.

More importantly GP was telling us about a phase III AIDS vaccine. Forget the
damn investment. Do you understand what that means to the world if it works? Or
are the implications of a successfull AIDS vaccine also off limits on this web site?

I probably don't understand the importance. I'm glad you do. There are threads where that post would have been very appropriate and welcome. I hope GP posted it there, and that interested people got to learn about it. (Though GP seemed little interested in the benefits of the vaccine to the human race and entirely focussed on the one- or two-day movement in the stock price.)

If you think there is not a good enough place for people to learn about exciting events in companies they don't follow, and where posts like GPs would be welcomed instead of criticized, the beauty of SI is that you are free to start such a thread. If that's how you define it, posts like GP's will be appropriate and welcome there, and I can assure you that (unless they violate other Terms of Use such as improper language or sharing insider information or puffery by undisclosed principals or the like) they will not be removed.

I hope your stay on SI is long and fruitful, that you learn from others and contribute your insights to others. From having been here a while, I can assure you that it works out quite well if we all just follow the rules we agreed to.

Well I feel
your criticisms don't belong here. How is that.

You are perfectly entitled to complain about my posts if you wish. If Jeff or Brad or Bob think my posts violate the Terms of Use, they will remove them. However, before complaining you might consider whether they don't fit precisely into the topic of this thread, "a place for existing members to make suggestions and discuss anything related to making SI a better place."
