Craig,

Two years from now you can be SURE that INTC will have chips that are twice as fast, run cooler, and consume less juice.

That's the major problem that I see with NSM's PCOAC strategy. If Intel is a generation or 2 ahead in process technology, they will be able to deliver performance that is multiple of MediaGX, while matching or even beating NSM's power consumption.

I don't know about NSM's access to the future Cyrix cores, but if NSM is stuck in place with MediaGX level performance next year and on, which is well below the performance of parts that Intel is discontinuing (Celeron 300A) it doesn't look very promising for NSM.

Someone might say that you don't need a lot of processing power in an IA. Technically, that may be true, but as evidenced by the demise of Cyrix / IDT, if the additional power is "free" (no price premium), people will take it.

I am sure that Intel (or actually Microsoft) will find ways to take advantage of the additional processing power.

Since we just found out that Geodes is nowhere near ready, the lead that NSM had in integration of the various cores (ahead of Intel) may not be very significant.

Also, Intel may be able to use the power of the general CPU to drive some components, that NSM is laboriously designing into silicon. MPEG decoding comes to mind.

Anyway, I don't really know what I am talking about here, so feel free to correct any of my assumptions.

Joe
