James,

I think a GTW merger is a positive for Compaq, because it would allow a dual-branded strategy. GTW has the know-how and the machinery for BTO-direct sales. Using this strategy the combined company would use the Compaq brand for retail stores and certain channel partners (VARs etc.). It would use the Gateway brand for direct sales and the merged company has the financial wherewithal to put some real muscle behind the direct arm. It might take a year for the transition, but it makes a great deal of sense because it would not compromise existing channels. This combination would constitute a serious competitor to Dell, because it could quickly attack the business market where Dell currently reigns supreme.

TTFN,
CTC
