>>As for winning carrier business - do you really think JNPR, an unbelievably strong and impressive start-up has a better shot at it than CSCO?

How this unfolds is obviously uncertain. I don't know where Cisco is exactly but I do know Juniper is ramping sales of its M40. They began in August 1998 and over 20 customers have installed them.

Cisco will beat up on anybody they want to when you are selling to Joe IT at XYZ Corporate because they own the market. However, internet backbone routers are different than a router for XYZ. Cisco can crush anybody they want in that environment. However, carriers are different. Cisco has been squaking about killing Ascend for a long time and they couldn't and didn't do it. Why? Because Ascend is good and customers were carriers. Enterprises don't want headaches even if it means going with a less efficient networt.

Look, the internet was built on Cisco routers and Cisco is the most important player in internet buildout as one upstart ain't gonna kill it. Cisco and Juniper can both succeed. Cisco is a behemoth and scary competitor but they can't stop Juniper M40's from ramping.
