Russia Approves Import of U.S. Genetically Modified Soybeans

Bloomberg News
July 16, 1999, 1:36 a.m. ET

Moscow, July 16 (Bloomberg) -- Russia approved imports of
genetically altered soybeans produced by Monsanto Co., one of the
world's largest agricultural-biotechnology companies, the first
time any GM food has been allowed into the country and opening the
way for more imports, Russian daily The Moscow Times reported.
Monsanto soybeans, genetically modified to resist certain
herbicides, were registered for sale on July 1 and the company
received a three-year import license from the Health Ministry.
Although Monsanto may yet face difficulties with labeling of its
products to show they are genetically modified, the ministry's
decision is unlikely to attract controversy that has surrounded the
GM food industry in Europe, the paper said.

Environmental groups in other countries, including the U.K.,
have tried to block the use of altered seeds and food arguing they
are not safe for humans and animals.
