I know what you mean.
If I may suggest a couple stocks for your research, Cisco (CSCO) and Broadcomm (BRCM)are outstanding long term stocks. Not for the weak heart, but they just keep going up and up and up. Check out their charts, streak of beating earnings estimates...etc. They have been two of my best performers, and will no doubt continue to dominate in their respective industries.
