Ask about which sizes and time wise guaranteed models that they may have on sale. If you run out of hot water taking a shower, now is the time to get a larger tank. Figure in the $200-$350 price range fully installed. (about $50 for installation, maybe $10-$20 to remove the old one.) So figure around $200 for the heater itself. Local installation charges obviously vary. There in the Bay area, I suspect you are looking at a bit more than my more rural experience.

$25 to $50 million for a good used ballpark.
