Academics here often pooh-pooh "good prose," and some actively discourage it in their
graduate students.


Precisely the point I was suggesting in my post to nihil. But I wasn't quite as blunt about it! <g>

In short, there is plenty of excellent historical writing out there. You just have to know
where to look for it.

I have found many entertaining histories- but few of them are written by people of this century. I DO like Halberstam- I particularly enjoyed The Fifties. And I LOVED Truman. But that is probably mostly because I like Truman so much.
