Also, anyone care to speculate how a S370 Gobi with improved FPU, 256k L2, and 133 MHz FSB would compare to PIII and K7?

MII needs 69% of the clock speed to keep up with Celeron, which pretty much equals ro PII/III. I think it would make more sense to compare it with K6-3 and Coppermine (not Katmai), which will have similar characteristics as Gobi (except K6-3 will have somewhat weaker FPU).

I guess the question is what ratio of the clock speed will Gobi need to deliver equal performance. It will be higher, I guess. Probably 80 to 85%. The second question is what actual clock speed will Gobi reach.

As far as K7, in my opinion, it is overrated. The slight advantage in integer performance over PIII at the same clock speed will be erased by Coppermine, and 30 - 40% advantage in FPU performance will be reduced as will by Coppermine. We will see whether Intel or AMD will be better at ramping clock speeds.
