Sharp> Sharp licenses Epoc OS for mobile systems By Yoshiko Hara EE Times (07/16/99, 1:15 p.m. EDT) TOKYO — Sharp Corp., a licensee of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, has licensed the Epoc real-time operating system of Symbian Ltd. (London) for use in upcoming mobile information products. Sharp recognizes Symbian's Epoc as a de facto standard, and hence will use the OS, a Sharp spokesman said. Sharp intends to start marketing Epoc-based mobile information products in Europe early next year, but has made no decision on sales to other regions, including Japan. Symbian, which is jointly owned by Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia and Psion, said Epoc is penetrating the Japanese market. NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT Docomo), Japan's largest mobile phone carrier, signed a memorandum of understanding with Symbian last March to jointly develop mobile terminal operating systems for W-CDMA products. "Epoc OS has very good prospects for use in third-generation cellular phones and other mobile terminals," NTT Docomo said at the time. Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd. decided to invest in Symbian in May after recognizing Epoc's promise for the next-generation cellular phones, according to Matsushita Communication. Matsushita, which now holds a 9 percent stake in Symbian, plans to introduce Epoc-based communicators next year, starting in Japan. Sharp is not the first OEM to license both Windows CE from Microsoft and Epoc from Symbian. NTT Docomo and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., the parent of Matsushita Communication, have also allied with Microsoft for the Windows CE operating system. Different divisions in each of these companies are working with Microsoft and Symbian respectively. Sharp, for instance, sells Windows CE handheld PCs in Japan, the United States and Europe, but its portable information products, such as the Zaurus and communicators, are not Windows CE platform products, according to Sharp.
