Dell said it wouldn't buy MSPG
Amid persistent rumors that Dell Computer (DELL) was interested in buying an Internet service provider, possibly Mindspring (MSPG), Dell vice chairman Kevin Rollins said that the computer maker probably would not buy an existing Internet service provider. The computer maker may build an Internet service he said, according to wire reports. Reuters reported that Dell had considered buying an established ISP, but thought the price would be unjustifiably high. Cheaper PC prices and a drive to increase the number of people connected to the Internet has given rise to a wave of alliances and rumored alliances among PC manufacturers and ISPs. "We believe we can partner with Internet companies or we can use our own capabilities with our Dell.net effort," Rollins said. The Dell.net ISP is already available in three European countries and should be available in the U.S. soon, the company indicated.
