>>ASND got in trouble when CSCO took them on in the RAS space...they turned to ATM and CSCC bailed them out. CSCO let them off the hook by not doing a better job of leveraging the STRM acquisition.

That is Cisco's spin. Ascend/Cascade deserve more credit than you give them. Its true that certain product segments ramp and taper off. Ascend and Cascade did their deal to compete with Cisco just like Cisco does acquisitions all the time to compete with Ascend.

>>I don't think ASND would have lasted more than 3-4 years of Cisco taking it to them in the carrier space.

Nor would Cisco have lasted this long if it weren't for their acquisitions.

>>I suspect CSCO is about 12 months away from being recognized as a major supplier (on the same tier as NT and LU) in the carrier market.

No they are certainly considered a 'major player' right now. Cisco owns the data (internet) market. The problem is that packet processing just isn't fast enough to do voice. It doesn't work and current routing is fast becoming the real bottleneck. Eventually it will do it but its going to take a while. Meanwhile, Juniper might be building the next great telecom company. If that is the case, upside could be 50-100b+ valuation.

The thing to remember about technology stocks is this, they are momentum driven and investors flock to companies that appear to have huge leverage and discount it far before you ever think. It continuously amazes me just how these multiples look but I believe you can take comfort knowing that in a bull market, leaders perform and Juniper is a leader. In a bear market, Juniper will get spanked but so will pretty much everything.

Gary,

IMO, ASND sold because they figured that they could get their shares to $130 like they are today, from the 50's. Mory was a good manager because he excercised his fudiciary responsibility as the head of the company to do what was best for the shareholders. Being bought by LU was the ticket. It had nothing to do with CSCO, imo. Westford had 0 (no) concerns whatsoever about CSCO. The people there have known for months that the CSCO product would never reach the street and were telling customers this for months. In any big contract situation, NN or NT were more formidable. I am happy that Mory sold out, as I am sure he is since he made millions and can now focus on new adventures. CSCO will continue to own the enterprise, where it flourishes. I would not bet on CSCO becoming a Nortel or LU (unless they buy NT..The CSCO brash attitude definitely does not fly in the politically oriented, technically savvy telcos.

Good luck,

Brian
