D of E - <Hmmm. INTC figured out that DSL is T-1 speed over EXISTING twisted pair. All INTC has to do is stick a Xeon at the CO, and a DSL MODEM in the home. ….Oh, Brave new world.>

Nice rant!!!

You mean a stack of Xeons and DSL modems at the CO. I don't think Hastings, Harvard, or wherever helped much - but good thinking nontheless.

Mary

Duke - Re: "Cable Modems are Dead, at least for the foreseeable future. "

Thanks for the rant and your perspective on Cable Modems, TCI, A T & T and that whole farce !

I liked your explanation - it fits with reality.

Maybe you can come along with me the next time I inquire at my local TCI office when Internet access will become available.

Paul

Not that easy. I live in a 10-year-old neighborhood in a Phoenix, AZ suburb and ADSL is available in this general area. However, when I inquired into ADSL Useless Worst told me that my line did not "qualify" for some reason and that I was just S.O.L. unless and until they rewired the area. Since Cox Communications has no incentive to get off of their lazy cable company ass to provide cable modems in this area, my only option for high speed access is via some expensive wireless jobby that still ties up my phone line for the uplink (and since my wife really wants a computer-free line I'd end up with that cost too). But the Good News is that, unless they've slipped the schedule for a fourth time since I last talked to them a couple of months ago, cable modems should be available in my area in the first quarter of 2000.

Ah, the joy of dealing with monopolies. You either get the "We don't care. We don't have to. We're the Phone Company." guys or you get the "Service should be restored within 24 to 48 hours. Since the outage is less than 72 hours you'll receive no credit on your bill." guys.

RE: "All INTC has to do is stick a Xeon at the CO,"

Sun had a big banner ad along one of the major highways, shouting "Telco Jobs Send resumes to telcocareers@sun.com." Interesting sizeable opportunity.
