Jim, under my scenario the Compaq brand would continue as the retail brand, and the Gateway brand would be the direct brand. That alleviates the retail channel partner problem.

In women's hosiery similar strategies are used. You have a single mill turning out several different brands where the major difference is packaging (the pantyhose is all the same, incidentally) aimed at different price points.

The only thing that makes sense to me in a GTW-DELL merger is the removal of a threat. There is nothing that GTW does that could not be easily copied and implemented by Dell. If DELL were to acquire another company I would want to see it looking for growth opportunities which would allow it to migrate its business model to other areas.

And I see no financial impediment to CPQ acquiring GTW. If there is an impediment it is more along the lines of a clash of wills (Waite vs. Rosen) than anything else.
