Interesting difference of market perspectives. Xicor presented a view that battery management could be a 100 million unit market annually with 40% cagr. Perhaps they are looking at it differently from DS. If DS number is more realistic perhaps Xicor will eventually raise its estimates by a double. I don't think they are too late. This will be a market where price and delivery will win the day. The devices are buried inside the battery pack so only the pack oem buyers will know.

Regarding BGA packaging even though Xicor is much smaller than Atmel as you have rightly stated they were first to market with BGA. Its true that ATML has now matched them on the surface but one must also look at the details. Details like price, footprint, power consumption and delivery will be considered by buyers looking to differentiate. Time will tell.
