Frank i read this with interest having been through a couple of earth quakes. Self sustained is about the only answer cbc which can still deliver messages out of the area. Hospitals run on batteries and generators. Local markets use local people to help and bring things back to order. People who live on the same block and never speak become buddies so not to worry human in need repairs what current and wires can't. Reality is business has to accommodate and adapt to the situation credit cards stop. All total electric control structures mean is break doors or windows to get in or out. We build to allow sway but we can't stop fires no matter how we use shut of valves, nor can we omit the use of satellite we have to have numerous methods of communication and generation of energy. We can't rely on one. Feel better this was just down communication lines no major life loss.
